A photo exhibition by Haruo Ohara (1909–1999), a photographer highly acclaimed in Brazil in recent years, titled "Haruo Ohara Photo Exhibition: Memories of the Brazilian Land and Family," is running until June 7th at the Art Gallery on the fifth floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building. Haruo Ohara immigrated to Brazil from Kochi Prefecture with his family at the age of 17, becoming one of the first immigrants to the country. After working on a farm in São Paulo, he settled in Londrina, Paraná, as a pioneer settler. At the age of 28, he purchased a compact camera and, in between farm work, began capturing the Brazilian landscape, his family, and the ever-changing city of Londrina. He subsequently exhibited his work in exhibitions both in Brazil and abroad, and in 1998, his first solo exhibition at the Londrina International Festival garnered a great response. His work was subsequently featured in the second (1998) and third (2000) editions of the Curitiba International Photography Biennial (Paraná), earning him high praise throughout Brazil. The "Haruo Ohara Photo Exhibition" is currently running at the Kochi Museum of Art in Kochi Prefecture until June 12th.
This exhibition, commemorating the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, displays approximately 30 photographs. The photographs showcase the artist's peaceful, steady portrayals of the vast farm he established and cultivated with his family and friends after moving to Brazil at a young age, the daily lives of the farmers working there, and his beloved family. This is the only place in Tokyo where you can see his work, making it a rare opportunity. In addition, his first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan will be held at the Itami City Museum of Art in Hyogo Prefecture from June 18th to July 18th.
