Julia Margaret Cameron, who elevated photography to art, to have her first retrospective in Japan

Jun 10, 2016

From July 2 to September 19, the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in Marunouchi, Tokyo, will host the exhibition "From Life: Julia Margaret Cameron, the Woman Who Breathed Life into Photography." Born in Calcutta, India, in 1815, Julia Margaret Cameron self-taught herself at age 48 and attempted to elevate photography, which had previously been merely a form of recording media, to the level of art. Cameron first picked up a camera at the end of 1863 and began creating photographs. Just a year and a half later, 63 of her works were acquired by South Kensington Museum, the predecessor to the Victoria and Albert Museum, achieving the remarkable feat of establishing her public acclaim. This exhibition, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, is an international traveling exhibition visiting six countries and is Cameron's first retrospective in Japan. The exhibition will feature extremely rare, limited-edition original prints (vintage prints), as well as approximately 150 photographs and related materials such as letters, vividly highlighting Cameron's creative intentions and showcasing the beautiful yet unconventional artistic expression she pioneered.
