This year marks the 40th anniversary of Osamu Goods. Their first full-scale exhibition, "Osamu Goods by Harada Osamu," will be held at the Yayoi Museum in Nezu, Tokyo, from July 1st to September 25th.
"Osamu Goods" is a collection of fancy goods featuring the illustrations of illustrator Harada Osamu. Offering a wide variety of items, including stationery, ceramics, and textiles, the brand boasted annual sales of 2 billion yen and sales of 5 million units in the late 1980s. Their school bags, in particular, are a symbol of the "80s girls' culture" that high school girls carried at the time. Furthermore, Harada Osamu's illustrations were featured on Mister Donut premium items for approximately 20 years from 1984, earning them nationwide recognition. They have become beloved by people of all ages and genders.
This exhibition will feature many never-before-seen documents and original drawings, showcasing approximately 1,000 nostalgic Osamu Goods. The treasured collection of Doi Akifumi, Japan's top collector of Osamu goods and head of the picture book production company Tom's Box in Kichijoji, will also be on display. The exhibition posters, flyers and official logo, which also pay homage to American pop art, were designed by Harada Osamu himself for this exhibition.
During the exhibition, there will be sales of exclusive merchandise, an autograph session with Harada Osamu and a gallery talk by Doi Akifumi of Tom's Box. Schedules and event details can be found on the Yayoi Museum's official website.
