The Yokoo Tadanori Museum of Contemporary Art will hold the "Yokoo Tadanori Great Nirvana Exhibition," running from January 24th to March 29th.
This exhibition showcases the artist Yokoo Tadanori's collection of approximately 600 reclining statues. Next to the peacefully reclining statues are Yokoo's works depicting violence, grief, suffering, and carnal desire, evoking the relationship between the sacred and the secular, and death and life.
Also on display are a variety of Nirvana paintings, ranging from the Buddha entering Nirvana to seductively beautiful nudes and animals in nirvana poses. These paintings combine the two elements of "nirvana" and "odalisque," bringing together modern Western-style nudes and early modern Nirvana paintings. The venue is divided into five chapters, among which many of Yokoo's paintings can be seen. "The Gaze of Nirvana" will feature Yokoo's paintings and clay sculptures with the motif of Nirvana statues. "Reincarnation" will introduce works from Yokoo's "Red Period" from the late 1990s, which depict a universe that encompasses life and death based on the image of reincarnation.
In addition, curators are scheduled to hold curator's talks on February 28th and March 14th. A related event, "My Nirvana with Clay," will be held on February 14th and 21st, and a rakugo live performance by Tamagawa Nanafuku will be held on the 22nd.
