Photographer Takashi Homma's solo exhibition "Chandigarh" has opened at CoSTUME NATIONAL's flagship store in Tokyo's Aoyama district. It runs until February 28th. Focusing on Chandigarh, a city in the northern Indian state of Punjab where Le Corbusier planned the city from scratch, the exhibition features photographs and video of three iconic buildings still standing in the central government complex known as the Capitol. The exhibition captures Chandigarh, a city that pursued modernism and functional beauty—new to India at the time—and the daily lives of its residents, from various angles. For the first building, the High Court, the exhibition features a photographic exhibit of the "brise-soleil" (brize-soleil) facades of gigantic columns painted red, blue, yellow, and green that provide shade from India's harsh summer sun, along with a video screening capturing the people passing by. For the second building, the "Communal Government Building," a photograph was taken of the panoramic view of the High Court from a 35m-high window, expressing the relationship between the two. The third building, the "Bus Terminal," was designed by Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier's cousin, who was responsible for much of Chandigarh's urban planning. A video filming a day in the life there is being screened at the venue.
