Hanayo's Grey Solo Exhibition at Costume National

Feb 10, 2014

Contemporary artist Hanayo's solo exhibition "Gray Zone" opens on February 13th at the gallery inside CoSTUME NATIONAL's Aoyama flagship store.

This exhibition features monochrome works photographed since 2017. Using a defocused framework, the works capture the Japan Hanayo rediscovered after returning from Germany 15 years ago. This exhibition was made possible because Costume National, which emphasizes the intersection of Japanese culture and contemporary art, resonated with Hanayo's worldview. This is the first solo exhibition in Tokyo to feature works exclusively in the brand's iconic color, "monochrome."

Born in 1970, Hanayo spent 15 years working in Berlin before relocating to Tokyo in 2010. She published her photo book "Hanayome," a pop-style portrait of everyday life, in 1996. Her work has also been exhibited internationally, including at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Taipei Biennale, and the Hayward Gallery in London. She has experience training as a geisha in the entertainment industry, and is active in a wide range of fields as an artist, musician, performer, and model, having appeared on the cover of The Face magazine in 1992.
