Fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy was born on February 21, 1927, in Paris, France. He decided to become a designer after seeing a costume exhibit at the 1937 Paris World's Fair. He joined Jacques Fath's fashion house at the age of 17, and later worked under Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong. In 1952, he founded his own brand, Givenchy. Known as a "prodigy of fashion," his innovative designs, which combined aristocratic sophistication with casual and chic elements, were beloved by celebrities such as Princess Grace and Jacqueline Kennedy. In 1954, he designed the costumes for the film "Sabrina," starring Audrey Hepburn. This led to Audrey Hepburn becoming the brand's muse, and he went on to provide costumes for films such as "How to Steal," "Breakfast at Tiffany's," and "Charade." He launched a perfume line in 1962 and a menswear line in 1973, and in recognition of these achievements he was awarded the De D'Or in 1978.
In 1995 he retired, appointing John Galliano as his successor. The brand has been taken over by Alexander McQueen and Julien Macdonald, and Riccardo Tisci is currently its creative director.
