Musician David Sylvian was born on February 23, 1958, in Kent, England.
In 1974, he formed the rock band "JAPAN" and debuted with the album "Endless Rebellion" in 1978. His unique sound, a blend of punk, glam, and black music, along with his visual kei look, made him a huge hit in Japan.
The album "Quiet Life" released in 1979 brought a major transformation, incorporating electric sounds. Then, in 1981, he released "Benriki no Taiko," considered a historic techno masterpiece. However, in 1982, the band disbanded due to "differences in musicality among the members."
He has deep ties to Japan, and around 1980, he began to befriend members of YMO. In 1982, he released a collaborative album with Ryuichi Sakamoto, and in 1983 he also collaborated with Sakamoto on the soundtrack "Forbidden Colors" for the film "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence." In 1984, he released his solo debut album, "Brilliant Trees," which attracted attention for its highly experimental new sound.
Since then, he has continued his musical career, taking a stance that is a step away from the mainstream pop and rock scenes, and has also been active in the art field. In 2006, he released a collaborative shirt with the Tokyo men's brand "JULIUS." In 2013, he held a solo exhibition in Tokyo and Kagawa that brought together photographs he had taken over the years.
