Onitsuka Tiger, a Japanese fashion brand, offers contemporary collections that blend fashion and sports, heritage and innovation. Onitsuka Tiger presented its Fall/Winter 2022 collection at Milan Fashion Week on Friday, February 25, 2022 (2:00 PM Italian time). Under the direction of Creative Director Andrea Pompilio, the brand has presented its collections in digital shows for Fall/Winter 2021 and Spring/Summer 2022, but this will be its first physical show since the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Fall/Winter 2022 collection can be summed up in one word: "Shadow." It also pays homage to the 1980s, when Japan's aesthetic of "purity and simplicity" shocked Western aesthetics, where opulence was considered the height of beauty. This Japanese aesthetic, with its reworked silhouettes, monochromatic tones, and details, redefined what had previously been taken for granted in the West. Following a virtual journey through Tokyo in the short film "MILAN-TOKYO," which was inspired by the Spring/Summer 22 collection's Tokyo travel concept, the collection returns to Tokyo this season to celebrate Japanese fashion of the 1980s. While Westerners saw the Japanese fashion scene of the 1980s as subversive, in Japan it was simply a part of everyday life. The collection reflects the group of boys dressed in all black, the layering that reflected the underground cultural scene of the time, and the extraordinary volume. The collection's collection is dynamic and contemporary, drawing on the era's inspirations. The layering of formal kimonos, the wabi-sabi philosophy of exceptional aesthetics and imperfection and transience, the rebellious fashion of 1970s girl groups that mixed classic school uniforms with items from men's wardrobes, the black leather punk boys reminiscent of London at the time, and the striking mix of black and white ninja aesthetics all made a huge impact in the West. This collection is dynamic and contemporary, drawing on the era's inspirations. Layering, a hallmark of Japanese formal wear, is key to the collection's originality and genderlessness.

Ultra-oversized T-shirts made from thick cotton and kaftans (overdresses) with graphic embroidery evoke the mischievous and energetic boys and girls of the city.
The only distinctive embellishments in the collection, which has a simple and minimalist overall feel, are the flame and flower prints on the hems of various apparel items. There are gothic, girly, and modern rock star-inspired velour dresses, an homage to the Sukajan jacket, and mini dresses with drawstring waists. These items are layered with nylon jackets, smooth or boa jackets, maxi Bermuda shorts made from the same material, midi-length pleated skirts, and multi-pocket vests, and topped off with balaclavas. For footwear, punkish leather flat-soled shoes and thin quilted nylon sneakers with bulky platform soles are also available.

The special sunglasses featured in this collection were created by Kaneko Optical, a historic Japanese company founded in 1958 and world-renowned for its artisanal eyewear frame manufacturing.
