Maison Martin Margiela's Spring/Summer 2014 women's collection, presented behind a white curtain, was inspired by the circus of the 1950s. Vintage-style embellishments using sequins and crystals adorned tailored styles with a glittering circus atmosphere.
Classic men's suits were reimagined in various ways. A sparkling jewel-embroidered bustier cinched the waist, disassembled sleeve sections connected with straps and ribbons, and high-waisted sequin-embroidered panties peek out from the waist. Silk evening dresses were restrained with elastic bands to create rich draping. Trench coats and suits were transformed into strap dresses, and lavishly embroidered detachable sleeves and bibs transformed classic tailored styles into glamorous and unique looks.
Materials include autumn/winter staples such as cotton gabardine, cashmere and knitwear, combined with chiffon, lurex, tulle and velvet. The colour palette is dominated by vibrant, strong tones such as burgundy, champagne and peacock blue.
Unique accessories are also present, such as shoes with clear heels that appear to float and accessories that look like rings have been resized into bracelets and bracelets resized into necklaces.
