Who is Alessandra Facchinetti, the new designer at Tod's?

Feb 18, 2014

Diego Della Valle, Chairman and CEO of Tod's Group, has always maintained a strong commitment to Italy, both in the craftsmanship that underpins his products and in his social responsibility to preserve his country's global heritage. These words, "Made in Italy" and "Italian style," are deeply ingrained in Tod's DNA.

In 2009, Tod's supported a project to photograph the lives of people across Italy for the photo book "Italian Touch," compiled by renowned Italian journalist Donata Sartorio. The book captured the rich Italian lifestyle, elegance, tradition, and culture, as well as the world Tod's pursues.

Alessandra Facchinetti, who has worked with numerous luxury brands such as Gucci and Valentino, was appointed Creative Director of Tod's, likely due to her Italian heritage and her familiarity with the world of the photo book "Italian Touch." Following the presentation of his first collection last September, Facchinetti responded to an interview with Vogue Japan, "It must mean a lot to me that I'm a true Italian at Tod's." This provided a glimpse of Facchinetti's confidence that he is the only one who can understand and update the "Italian style" that Chairman Della Valle is seeking. ■Facchinetti's Sensibility The brand's first runway show was held in a relaxed setting reminiscent of a private home in Milan. Facchinetti presented a beautiful collection inspired by art, incorporating the colors and geometric forms of renowned Italian architect Gio Ponti, the resolute beauty of women seen in Avedon's photographs of contemporary dancer Sylvie Guillem, and the application of designs reminiscent of the work of Italian artist Paolo Scheggi to accessories and leatherwear.

Particularly eye-catching were the tops, dresses, and skirts crafted from thin, supple leather, fully showcasing Tod's craftsmanship. Furthermore, the perforated leather subtly incorporates one of Tod's iconic signatures. Leather pairs well with woven fabrics, enhancing each other's textures. The bags and shoes, which complement the outfits, feature perfectly coordinated color palettes and shapes. Of course, both the bags and shoes are highly polished on their own, creating a striking presence that complements outfits from other brands.

The graceful color palette and intelligent, feminine sparkle of Facchinetti's creations are sure to appeal to the sensibilities of Japanese women. The first collection will be available worldwide on February 19th at the Milan flagship store in Italy and the Isetan Shinjuku store.
