Rodriguez, Trejo and Gaga join forces for Machete Kills

Feb 28, 2014

The much talked about film "Machete Kills," starring Lady Gaga, will be released on March 1st. It's the sequel to the original "Machete."

The story revolves around the protagonist Machete, played by Danny Trejo, receiving a request from the US President (Carlos Estevez, real name Charlie Sheen) to eliminate a Mexican revolutionary (Demián Bichir) plotting to overthrow Washington. As the story progresses, the true motives of the mastermind, arms dealer Voz (Mel Gibson), become clear.

Director Robert Rodriguez's signature style is as strong as ever. The first half is wilderness action, but the second half shifts to something else, evoking a story reminiscent of "From Dusk Till Dawn." The opening trailer lays out the plot, a true Rodriguez style. It's fitting that Machete began with the trailer for "Grindhouse." The film also displays the same silly creativity as "Desperado," with features like a machine gun and an armored vehicle. Even the film's signature weapon, the machete, has undergone some evolution. The supporting cast is also impressive, including Antonio Banderas, Cuba Goodin Jr., Jessica Alba, and Johnny Depp's girlfriend, Amber Heard. Lady Gaga, who first appeared in the film, plays a character that's uniquely her own. Perhaps that's why she was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Best Supporting Actress, which recognizes the "worst movies." For better or worse, it's a natural, character-like role. Currently, the nationwide nail salon "Nail Quick" is running a campaign offering four different nail designs inspired by the characters played by Gaga, Heard, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sofia Vergara. Now showing at Shinjuku Wald 9 and other theaters.
