Club culture-themed exhibition "10" currently running in Berlin

Aug 20, 2014

The club culture-themed exhibition "10" is being held in Berlin from August 7th to 31st. The venue is Berghain, the legendary techno club in the city center. To commemorate its 10th anniversary in 2014, nine artists are exhibiting their works.

Berlin is home to many abandoned factories and buildings. These spaces are utilized as clubs where people can dance to DJ music. The city has countless such spaces, which is why many people associate Berlin with club culture. Berghain, however, stands at the pinnacle of this trend, drawing many visitors.

The building occupies a former thermal power plant, with a huge hall serving as the dance floor. The exhibition space is a portion of the hall. The vast, dimly lit space teems with dance music wafting from the adjacent space. This extraordinary space is home to a variety of works, including photography, video, and painting.

Hanging from the high ceiling is a work by painter Norbert Bisky. Strips of painting rotate like turbines. The piece, titled "Dancing Carpet," draws attention to the building's former thermal power plant and its current use as a dance floor.

Also participating in the exhibition is artist Carsten Nicolai, who DJs and plays in clubs. His work shines bright light on heated air, projecting the shadows of the air onto the wall. Though the work is very simple, it evokes the building's history as a thermal power plant and the heat of the dance floor.

Another artist with a personal connection to Berghain is also exhibiting. Photographer Sven Marquardt works here while working as a doorman. He shows photographs of Berlin clubs and the people who frequent them. Because the subject matter is so familiar to the artist, his work reveals the true face of club culture.

The exhibition features works you won't find in a museum, such as Sarah Schonfeld's work, which sheds a mysterious light in the darkness, and Marc Brandenburg's work, which relocated a small building to the hall. Each piece evokes the history of the building and Berlin's clubs. Because they are exhibited in real clubs, the place and the works seem to resonate with each other.

The appeal and influence of club culture was evident in these exhibitions. Because the venue was not a museum, many people who would not have been interested in exhibitions came and enjoyed the works and the space. Of course, it wasn't just general visitors who were drawn to the exhibition. Berlin artists, designers, and fashion professionals also visited, proving its immeasurable influence. There is no better way to experience the power of Berlin's club culture than this exhibition.
