Novelist Mary Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, in London, England, and died on February 1, 1851.
Shortly after giving birth, her mother died of puerperal fever. She was raised by political commentator William Godwin, known as the founder of anarchism. When she was 16, Percy Bysshe Shelley, a leading Romantic poet, began visiting her home, and she eventually fell in love with him. However, Percy was married at the time, so the two eloped and spent their days wandering around Europe.
In 1816, the poet Lord Byron invited the two to spend the summer at his villa on Lake Geneva in Switzerland. However, Switzerland was hit by a long rainstorm that year, and the couple were trapped there for an extended period. Boredom led them to write a ghost story, at Byron's suggestion. It was at this time that the story of Frankenstein's monster was born. Mary continued writing, publishing the full-length novel "Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus" in 18.

Meanwhile, in her personal life, she had a son, William, with Percy, and the two eventually married. They had a daughter, Claire, but her daughter died just a year later, and her son soon followed. In 1922, Percy also died in an accident, and she returned to England with her only surviving son, Florence. In her later years, while raising him, she continued to publish works such as "The Last Man" and "Matilda."
