Architect Arata Isozaki's solo exhibition "2 x 5 = 60" will be held at the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Jingumae, Tokyo, from August 31st to January 12th, 2015.
This exhibition focuses on "extra-architectural thinking." The term "extra-architectural thinking" as used here has two meanings: specific "extra-architectural" thinking in contemporary cultural representation in general, including art, music, video, and photography, and "architecture" that attempts to deconstruct and reorganize those cultural representational methods. Isozaki aimed to visualize "extra-architectural thinking" through multifaceted methods that go beyond the title of architect.
The exhibition is centered around a full-scale model of Isozaki's study in Karuizawa, known as the "Birdhouse," where he spends the summers away from his Tokyo studio and working on projects outside of architecture. The second and third floors are themed "12 Extra-Architectural Thoughts" and "12 Collaborations," and will feature traces of Marilyn Monroe's proportions that Isozaki used as a curved ruler, as well as works he has collaborated with, including Taro Okamoto, Jiro Takamatsu, and Isamu Noguchi.
On the fourth floor, sketches drawn by Isozaki during his travels are on display under the three themes of "12 Homes," "12 Journeys (Eastern Edition: Orient)," and "12 Journeys (Western Edition: Occident)."
In addition, various events are scheduled to be held during the exhibition, including a performance by dancer Tanaka Min and a concert by sho player Miyata Mayumi and violinist Shoji Sayaka. Reservations are required for all events.
Arata Isozaki graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo. In 1963, he established Atelier Arata Isozaki. He has created a wide range of buildings, from the group of buildings concentrated in Oita City in the 1960s, such as the Oita Prefectural Central Library, to the wide range of buildings he has realized both domestically and internationally in the 1990s, with an emphasis on personal thought and space. His activity over more than half a century has always transcended the framework of architecture, using a variety of expressive methods such as thought, art, design, music, film, and theater to raise issues that intersect with eras and other disciplines.
