Akira Uno, one of Japan's leading illustrators, created the visuals for the "Color Festival," which will be held on each floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building and Men's Building from August 27th to September 9th.
The concept of the event is a "Fantasy Department Store Museum." The six rooms available to view in the museum are imagined as the homes of six women with different personalities, and illustrations of each type of woman are accompanied by explanations of their characteristics. Each woman exudes a mysterious aura, and their expressions are intriguingly suited to the "imaginary museum."
The six types of women are categorized as taciturn, busy, clean-freak, fraternal, nihilistic, and dreamy.
The room of the "taciturn," who spends most of the day motionless as if lost in thought, is home to a gardenia, a flower said to have been named "kuchinashi" (without a mouth) because its fruit remains ripe even when ripe. Also, due to this image, wallets with tightly closed lids to prevent wasteful spending are often seen in this room.
In the room of the "busy type," who are always busy and on the go, you can see a clock that never stops working. In the room of the "clean freak type," who loves cleanliness, a raccoon lives, busily washing dirty things. Of course, the same goes for handkerchiefs, a necessity after washing dishes.
In the room of the "friendship type," who are filled with a spirit of compassion, dodos are said to live, having been overhunted and become extinct due to their lack of ability to be suspicious of others. This is also the room where Gemini, the symbol of friendship, shines.
In the room of the "void type," who lack a sense of reality, a mirror is installed to help them confirm their own existence, but they can only see themselves in a reversed image. The glass in this room is made of glass, which could break if accidentally pushed too hard. The reason they are often empty is because they have been waiting a long time for something to be poured into them.
In the room for the "Dreamers" who tend to give themselves over to fantasy, you can see silkworm moths dreaming of the day they will fly out into the world. Also, as this type has an eye for glittering things, they often look at precious metals and gemstones without putting them away in their accessory cases.
The exhibits based on the six categories will be displayed mainly in the show windows of Isetan Shinjuku. Detailed explanations of each type can also be found on the special Colorful Festival website.
