"Combs, Hairpins, and Fashion: Chic, Elegant, and Beautiful" is an exhibition showcasing precious combs and hairpins from the Sawanoi Comb and Hairpin Museum's collection, along with ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period, and is running from January 28th to March 26th at the Takasaki Tower Museum of Art.
Combs and hairpins, used by women to style their hair, have long been regarded as practical items, but they come in a wide variety of materials, shapes, processing techniques, and expressions, and are also art and crafts that represent the "elegance" of Japanese culture, filled with outstanding techniques and intricate decorative designs.
In addition to gorgeous combs, hairpins, and hairpins used from the mid- to late Edo period, this exhibition will also feature ukiyo-e prints and modern creative prints by renowned Japanese painters, and curators will provide commentary on the works. Furthermore, there will be a lecture by Takako Murata, a senior researcher at the Pola Cultural Research Institute, on "Changes in hairstyles in the Edo period as seen in ukiyo-e," as well as a demonstration by a hairstylist (applications must be made by postcard).
Why not enjoy a world of sophisticated beauty created by the aesthetic sense that Japanese women place on their hair and the exceptional skills of their artisans?
