Artist Noritaka Tatehana's solo exhibition "CAMELLIA FIELDS" will be held at Gallery KOSAKU KANECHIKA in Shinagawa, Tokyo, from March 11 to April 28.
The title of the exhibition, "Camellia Fields," refers to a large-scale installation featuring new works. This stunning work, a three-meter-wide carpet of hand-painted cast camellias, is inspired by the landscape of Kamakura, where Tatehana grew up, and expresses a uniquely Japanese aesthetic and view of life and death. Among his representative works to date are the "Floating World Series," featuring courtesan clogs painted with Yuzen dyeing, and the "Hairpin Series," featuring monumental sculptures of courtesan hairpins. New paintings, completed with the "handcrafted craftsmanship" that is the origin of his creative practice, will also be on display for the first time. In recent years, Tatehana has been actively working on creative projects with traditional craftsmen, and in March 2016 he directed his first Bunraku puppet theater production, "Tatehana Bunraku: The Love Suicides on the Bridge," at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris. His unique works are included in the permanent collections of renowned art museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
