From March 9th to April 2nd, EYE OF GYRE in Omotesando, Tokyo, will host an exhibition titled "Art Brut? Outsider Art? Or What? - The Value Therein," showcasing a selection of works by artists with intellectual or mental disabilities.
Japanese art brut (raw art, also known as outsider art in English) is produced mostly in facilities for the intellectually disabled. Characterized by bright, rich colors and free, spontaneous expression, Japanese art brut has recently begun to attract attention.
This time, Enlightenment is in charge of art direction, and photographer Wakagi Shingo will be taking portraits of the artists. The exhibition features a selection of works by 25 active artists, carefully selected by experts from around the country. The energetic, humorous, and sometimes unconventional works will be on display and available for purchase.
Participating artists include Emi, Inoue Masaru, Okamoto Toshio, Kawabe Hiroko, Tanaka Mutsumi, and Miyashita Koji from Yamanami Kobo, Ito Taro, Iwamoto Yoshio, and Matsumoto Michiko from studioCOOCA, Ueda Masashi and Hirano Yoshiyasu from YELLOW, and Kurita Eiji and Nishikawa Yasuhiro from Koboshu.
