Giant votive plaques and a skating rink will be displayed at Tokyo Midtown during the New Year holidays

Dec 20, 2013

Tokyo Midtown has announced its New Year's events. A special exhibition will begin on December 27th, and an outdoor ice skating rink will open for a limited time from January 8th.

The main New Year's attraction will be the "Kyuto Uema" (Nine-Headed Ema). These giant votive plaques, approximately 2.5 meters wide, are decorated with nine blessings for good fortune: business, career advancement, marriage, wealth, success, health, marriage, good harvests, a good catch, and exams. They will be displayed in the atrium of Midtown, appearing to soar through the air. The same atrium will also feature a series of kites. Fukuwarai kites featuring photos of people's faces, created at a workshop on December 7th and 8th, will adorn the space. The votive plaques and kites will be on display until January 26th.

Other events planned include a stamp rally to collect the Seven Lucky Gods, a "Kite Calligraphy Event" where young calligraphers will write participants' favorite characters, free sake, lion dances, and a variety of other events, even before the New Year holidays.

From January 8th, a limited-time outdoor ice skating rink, "Diners Club Ice Rink in Tokyo Midtown," will be set up in the grass plaza. This year, marking its fifth year, the theme is "Love." The rink is 20 x 42m and can accommodate a maximum of 210 people. Tickets are 1,500 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for children, and season tickets are also available. A heated rest area will be set up next to the rink where people can stay in their skates. There will also be content planned that allows couples and families to have fun while deepening their love. The event will run until March 9th.
