To celebrate the opening of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' first-ever motion picture museum, Girard-Perregaux, a venerable Swiss luxury watchmaker, has released a photo book commemorating their partnership. The book features film scenes selected from archive materials, photographs of the Girard-Perregaux workshop, patent documents, and more. It also includes images from Harold Lloyd's silent film "Hugo" (1923) and Martin Scorsese's 3D film "Hugo," which was made 88 years later and won five Academy Awards in 2012. While the release date for the book has yet to be announced, a giveaway is currently underway on the official website of Sowind Japan, the brand's importer and distributor in Japan. The deadline for entries is February 28, 2014.
In addition, a special model, the "Chronohawk Hollywoodland," was released as a homage to the world of film. Like the Oscar statuette, the new Chronohawk is adorned with shining gold and crafted from rose gold and black ceramic with alternating matte and polished finishes, highlighting the engraving on the case. It is priced at 2.1 million yen.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a film-related organization with over 6,000 members representing the film industry. Its roles include selecting and presenting the annual Academy Awards, providing public programs, and providing financial support to other film-related organizations.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is scheduled for completion in downtown Los Angeles in 2017. Girard-Perregaux announced in 2012 that it would be the museum's timekeeper and official sponsor.
