AKIKOAOKI presented their 2017-18 Fall/Winter collection at Shibuya Hikarie on March 24th during Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO 2017 A/W. Based on the theme of "Primitive," the collection expressed innate human senses, physicality, and earthy qualities. Models moved along the runway in a figure-eight pattern, allowing looks to be seen from every angle, and the show was held in front of an audience so large they could not fit inside the venue. A model appeared in a bright pink first look to the tune of FKA twigs' "Water Me." Next, models walked down the runway in dresses with large puff sleeves and pleated skirts, apron-style tops, skirts layered over pants, and wrap skirts with bustier-like embellishments. "Compared to last season's many looks that used corsets and other materials to shape the body, this season I focused on the 'distance' between the body and the clothes, and created designs that incorporated the movement of the fabric and a flow that connected to the body," Aoki commented. Regarding the "wrapped" items, inspired by bohemian folk clothing, she said, "I wanted to create pieces with different silhouettes from the front, back, and side. The act of wrapping itself has its roots in primitive things, so I think it's a symbolic style of this season." On the other hand, "When you hear the word 'indigenous,' you might imagine something heavy, powerful, and thick, but one of the themes this time was to deliberately combine it with elegant pieces like dresses." This attempt was expressed in items like puff-sleeved shirt dresses and tops made of tight, innerwear-like fabric with floral embellishments. Head accessories reminiscent of vertically curled hair and headbands resembling angel wings were created in collaboration with jewelry designer Masanori Shimizu.
Akiko Aoki's world, which incorporates primitive elements while also exuding a sense of sophistication and innocence, seems to have evolved even further. After the show, she exuded a certain confidence as she sprinted down the runway in a black dress.
