HYKE's first show at Tokyo Fashion Week [Women's Fall/Winter 2017-18]

Mar 27, 2017

HYKE, the brand created by Hideaki Yoshihara and Yukiko Oide, presented their 2017-18 Fall/Winter collection on March 24th at the HYKE showroom in Nakameguro, Tokyo. This marked their first appearance at Tokyo Fashion Week. The collection featured two presentations in the form of an installation featuring models. HYKE's brand concept is to evolve the history and heritage of clothing through their own unique sensibilities. This season, the collection drew inspiration from rider jackets, flight jackets, and outdoor clothing. The collection featured an oversized, collarless coat reminiscent of a kimono or gown, with two buttons at the neck, a diagonal silver zipper, and a belt, just like a rider jacket. The rider jacket was stripped of its embellishments and reinterpreted as a different piece. The MA-1 blouson featured designs without sleeves or with the front stripped, as if worn backwards. The collection also featured collarless and buttonless jackets and long gilets reminiscent of the 1990s. These pieces were paired with knee-length dresses or layered dresses over pants. Although there are some trendy touches, such as sleeves that are so long they cover the palms of the hands, the overall impression is one of austerity.

The designs and items evoke the word minimalism, and their essence has remained unchanged since the green era. However, after a series of designs that combined basic items with different materials or different items, designs that could be called revivals or reinterpretations of the 80s and 90s have appeared, this looks fresh and on-trend.

Future developments, such as whether the brand will continue to participate in Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO, will also be attracting attention.
