The "Shin Sobue + cozfish: Book Design" exhibition, where visitors can learn about the process of book creation, will be held from January 23 to March 23, 2016, in the special exhibition room on the first floor of the Hibiya Library and Museum in Tokyo.
The exhibition uses books designed by Shin Sobue, Japan's renowned graphic designer known for works such as Taiyo Matsumoto's "GOGO Monster" and Sensha Yoshida's "Densha Otoko-n desu." It showcases the process from ideation and planning to completion, including the paper used, book structure, printing methods, and bookbinding. Comprised of three sections, the "cozfish Library" displays over 2,000 fully bound books by Shin Sobue + cozfish. The exhibition is divided into two sections: the first section, "cozf Edition," features books from the 20th century, and the second section, "ish Edition," features books from the 21st century. The "Soseki Room" will introduce the production process of new editions of Natsume Soseki's "Kokoro" and "I Am a Cat," works familiar to many Japanese people. Also on display will be Soseki's own cover art for the first editions, as well as galleys he edited. The "Book Laboratory" will introduce the various steps in bookmaking, divided into sections covering ideas, paper, typefaces, book structure, color and halftoning, processing, and the lifespan of a book. Also, on February 18, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, a talk entitled "Bookbinding: All About It" will be held between Shin Sobue and Takahisa Shirai, graphic designer and professor in the Department of Visual Communication Design at Musashino Art University. On March 10, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, a three-person talk session entitled "Behind the Scenes of Soseki Book Production" will be held, featuring Sobue, Asaka Watanabe of Iwanami Shoten's Book Editorial Department, and Kosaku Maeda of Iwanami Shoten's Production Department.
