Story Pod, a revolutionary foldable mini library, appears in the middle of a residential area

Dec 15, 2015

A small, boxy building suddenly appears in the middle of a residential area in Toronto, Canada. It's actually a library named "Story Pod." Its chic black exterior is compact, but the folding side walls open like a book cover, transforming it into an open space with a striking wood grain. Residents can relax and read inside, or surround the library for outdoor reading.

The books in the library are owned by local residents and are managed independently. Users are welcome to bring unwanted books from home and leave them there. If a book they like is on display, they're welcome to read it there or take it home. The inventory is quickly turned over, eliminating waste. The selection changes every time, adding to the enjoyment. When the library closes at night, it folds back into its boxy form. At night, the LED lights are powered by electricity stored in solar panels on the ceiling, creating a different atmosphere from the daytime.

It was created by the architectural design team Atelier Kastelic Buffey. In order to make it possible to create a simple, low-cost, and waste-free production, they only used materials such as plywood. The area in Toronto where it is installed, Newmarket, is a popular residential area that has seen a rapid increase in the number of homes in recent years, and it was created as part of a project that focuses on the community. While the morals of those who use it may be called into question, if used well it will become a good community space.
