The world's largest botanical art collection in the world will be hosting the "English Garden: Flowers Gathered in Britain" exhibition.

Jan 3, 2016

"English Gardens: Flowers of Britain," an exhibition showcasing works from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, a World Heritage Site with a collection of 220,000 botanical art pieces, will be held at the Panasonic Shiodome Museum in Shinbashi, Tokyo, from January 16 to March 21, 2016. An English garden is a style of garden created by skillfully arranging a wide variety of flowers while making the most of the natural landscape. Created in the mid-18th century as the private garden of a British king, Kew has now become a cutting-edge botanical research institute and a botanical garden home to a vast collection of botanical art. In 2003, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The exhibition will feature approximately 150 pieces from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew's collection, including selected masterpieces of botanical illustrations and plant-inspired designs and crafts. The exhibition will feature works from around the world dating back to the dawn of botanical art, as well as works by 20th- and 21st-century botanical artists, including the official artists of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The exhibition will also feature a sketch of an orchid (Gaviea patagonica) by Charles Darwin, known for his theory of evolution, and 15 carefully selected works from the Marian North Gallery, which houses 832 works by female traveler Marian North. The exhibition will also feature the first public viewing of the Deanery Garden, a garden inspired by Gertrude Jekyll, a pioneer of English gardens. In honor of the garden, a special limited-edition coloring book by exhibiting artist Rachel Pedersmith will be available for free on January 28th, February 8th, March 3rd (Peach Festival), and March 8th (Bee Day). The exhibition was designed by the acclaimed Klein Dytham Architects. Part of the venue will be filled with the scent of an English garden.
