The Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Aoyama, Tokyo, will be hosting the "Ryuichi Sakamoto | Installation Music Exhibition" from April 4th to May 28th.
The exhibition will explore the world of Ryuichi Sakamoto's new album "async," his first in eight years (3,780 yen including tax; released in Japan on March 29th, worldwide on April 28th), from various angles, using sound, video, and installations. Exhibits include books, films, and DVDs that influenced Sakamoto's creation, as well as handwritten sheet music and notes, including doodles, making it even more enjoyable to view after listening to the music on the second to fourth floors. Each of the exhibitions will showcase the album from various angles. The "drowning" listening room (2nd floor) features a special 5.1-channel surround mix of the album "async," produced and supervised by Sakamoto himself, accompanied by video footage by artist Shiro Takatani, Sakamoto's longtime collaborator. The "volume" exhibition (3rd floor) features a virtual recreation of the album's production environment, created by the up-and-coming New York video team "Zakkubalan," showcasing footage of Sakamoto's private space and the sounds that resonate there. The "first light" exhibition (4th floor) will showcase a video inspired by the album "async" by the internationally acclaimed Thai film director and videographer Apichatpong Weerasethakul, featuring a specially remixed version of the sound created by Sakamoto. In addition to simply showcasing Sakamoto's world, a "communication wall" will be set up next to the reception desk on the first floor to encourage interaction with listeners. Visitors can freely write their impressions and questions about "async" on slips of paper and post them on the wall. These impressions and questions will be sent to Sakamoto in New York, and the responses will also be posted on the wall and introduced on the official website.
