Vik Muniz, a Brazilian artist born in Sao Paulo, currently lives and works between New York and Rio de Janeiro. He is currently working on a series called "Pictures of Magazines 2." In this series, he creates paintings by hand-torn and pasting together sections of magazines and books. Through this extraordinary process, he has created masterpieces by Van Gogh, Manet, and Cézanne. The materials used in his works are magazines and books completely unrelated to the paintings he recreates. Upon closer inspection, he uncovers a variety of characters, including Scarlett Johansson, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and the popular Star Wars character C3PO, all of whom appear to have been clipped from tabloid magazines. However, he does not treat any of the materials as special, instead giving them all equal value and presence. In today's world, we live surrounded by an overwhelming amount of information, some of which is valuable, while others are merely junk. The "Pictures of Magazines 2" series is said to represent the constant jumble of information.
Vic has also produced other original series such as "Pictures of Chocolate," in which he brilliantly recreates photographs using chocolate, and "Pictures of Garbage," in which he creates giant paintings using waste collected from garbage dumps.
