January 1st is Jeanne Lanvin's birthday.

Jan 1, 2014

Fashion designer Jeanne Lanvin was born on January 1, 1867, in Paris, France. She passed away on July 6, 1946.
She began working at a Paris millinery shop at the age of 13 and founded "LANVIN" in 1889. She started out as a hat designer, but after a dress she made for her daughter, Marie Brangie, proved popular, she began tailoring children's clothing. She later expanded into women's wear.
She established an elegant style incorporating ethnic details and drawing inspiration from ancient art and paintings. She attracted attention with dresses embroidered with sequins and beads, and clothing in the translucent, deep blue color "Lanvin Bleu." She is also known for introducing the "garçonne look," a boyish style for "active women" in the 1920s.
She established the perfume department in 1925 and the men's clothing department in 1926. The perfume "Arpege," released in 1927, was a huge hit, and the business continued to expand gradually thereafter. Even after Jeanne's retirement, the brand has continued to attract people with designers representing the era.

The current designer is Alber Elbaz. In May 2013, a new flagship store carrying the brand's entire line opened in Ginza 4-chome.
