As part of its New Year's project, Isetan Shinjuku will host a "New Year's Museum" in the main building's 6th floor event hall from January 2nd. The exhibition will run until January 5th. Thirteen kabuki costumes from the Meiji to Showa eras, owned by the Mitsukoshi Archives, will be exhibited alongside illustrations and commentary by kabuki concierge Kazuko Tsuji. One particularly eye-catching piece is the New Year's uchikake worn by the courtesan "Agemaki" from "Sukeroku." Embroidered with battledores, ornaments, and kadomatsu (New Year's decorations), this costume is said to bring good luck when viewed in the New Year. It is said to have been worn by Onoe Kikugoro VI at the Kabuki-za in 1933. Also on display will be a replica of a "tako-e" (kite painting) cape from Kansai Yamamoto's kabuki-inspired collection. At the same time, the "Kansai Yamamoto POP UP STORE @ TOKYO KAOHZOKU" will be held at the TOKYO KAOHZOKU on the second floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku, where Kansai Yamamoto's collection will be sold in a retail store for the first time in approximately 20 years. The pop-up shop will be open until January 14th.
The New Year Museum will also host a number of talk events related to Kabuki and Japanese clothing. On January 2nd, Kansai Yamamoto will hold a talk show titled "KABUKI and BASARA," in which he will talk about the spirit of Japanese culture embodied in expression as a Japanese person. In addition, artist Lady Aiko, who created the visuals displayed in the store's window displays, and fashion director Sota Yamaguchi will also be participating.
Also, depending on the day, there will be different New Year's games and entertainment, such as lion dances, performances of Japanese musical instruments, an eat-in corner with ozoni (rice cake soup) and oshiruko (sweet red bean soup), and candy crafts by Asakusa candy artisan Tezuka Shinri, proposing the Japanese New Year from the perspectives of playing, dressing up, and eating. On January 3rd, there will be a food live performance by the art unit "heso," and food and drinks incorporating elements of kabuki will be served free of charge.
