Jan 17, 2014

Vidal Sassoon was born on January 17, 1928, in London, England. He passed away on May 9, 2012. He spent his childhood in a Jewish orphanage from age 5 to 11, and at age 14, he apprenticed under hairdresser Adolf Cohen. In 1948, he joined the Israeli Defense Forces and fought in the First Arab-Israeli War. After returning from the war, he apprenticed under renowned hairdresser Raymond Bessone, and in 1954, at the age of 26, he opened his own successful salon on London's Bond Street. In 1963, he created actress Nancy Kwan's hair and attracted attention with the "classic bob" style he invented. He is known for creating similar styles for Mary Quant and Emmanuel Kahn. In 1964, he invented the "five point cut," a hairstyle consisting of five triangles (sharply cut points) of various sizes. This cut, which instantly returns to its original shape even when combed through with your fingers, revolutionized the global hair fashion industry and became his biggest hit.

He entered the US market in 1965 and subsequently opened salons in Canada, Germany, and other countries. In 1969, he founded a beauty school and in 1973, he expanded his business to include developing hair care products.

In his personal life, he was married four times. He and his second wife, actress Beverly Adams, were close enough to host a talk show together and co-publish a book, but they divorced in 1980. In 2011, he announced he had leukemia and fought the disease, but he passed away on May 9, 2012, at his home in Los Angeles. His life can be learned from the documentary film "Vidal Sassoon," released in 2010.
