A film retrospective of pop artist Andy Warhol will be held at Theater Image Forum in Shibuya, Tokyo from February 15th to 28th.
Warhol influenced many aspects of culture, including painting, advertising, design, music, and thought, but his films also had a major impact on the art and cinematic expression of the time. This time, for the first time in about 20 years, 13 of Warhol's representative works will be screened in their original 16mm format. The projection speed will also be reproduced from the original screening.
Program A will screen the silent film "EAT," which features a long film of contemporary artist Robert Indiana eating mushrooms, and "KISS," which shows only various kissing scenes.
Program B will feature "SLEEP," a film of the sleeping poet John Giorno, and "EMPIRE," one of Warhol's most legendary films, which projects the Empire State Building from 8 p.m. to dawn.
Program C will feature "HENRY GELDTZAHLER," a slow-motion projection of curator Henry Geldtzahler smoking a cigarette on a sofa, Program D will feature "BEAUTY #2," featuring fashion model Edie Sedgwick, and Program E will feature "CHELSEA GIRLS," Warhol's most commercially successful film. Program F will feature "Blow Job," a masterpiece of Warhol's early films that exudes homosexual eroticism, and "Vinyl," an S&M chamber drama starring the aforementioned Edie.
Program G will feature "My Hustler," which Warhol himself shot and which chronicles everyday scenes as if peeking into them. Program H will feature "The Life of Juanita Castro," which attempts to rewrite history based on rumors surrounding the Castro family of the Cuban Revolution and suggests a transition to commercial film. Program I will feature "Nude Restaurant," which depicts a restaurant where both staff and customers are naked. Program J will feature "Lonesome Cowboys," Warhol's first location film and his final directorial work.
