Matsuzakaya Ueno store to undergo renovation in March with seniors in mind, food section also undergoes first renovation in 17 and a half years

Jan 27, 2014

Due to reconstruction work on the South Building, Matsuzakaya Ueno will have a grand opening on March 12th, with only the Main Building remaining.

The store will target the local resident 60-something (Arakan, short for "around 60") and senior citizens as its core customers, a strength it has always had. It will create a store that is close to their lives and can be used daily, making it feel like "our department store." In addition to expanding its product lineup to match the lifestyles and needs of its target demographic, it will also introduce same-day delivery services in designated areas throughout Taito and Bunkyo wards, shopping escort and proxy services, and fax order delivery. It will also offer fashion consultations to assess impressions and personal colors, as well as seminars on inheritance and pensions.

Specialized sales areas aimed at the 60-something and senior citizens will also be set up. In October, "Madame Selection" will open, a sales area for women where they can enjoy tea while shopping as if they were in their own living room. In November, "Good Sleep Lab" will open, suggesting ideal bedding, "Support Lab" will open, where customers can casually try out nursing care products such as hearing aids and silver carts, and "Oshare Lab" will open, focusing on beauty, health, and relaxation, from wigs to health foods. The men's clothing section will offer a "Dad's Size Notebook" where customers can record all measurements, including neck, waist, and inseam, strengthening support for wives purchasing on their behalf. The food floor will also be renovated for the first time in 17 and a half years and reopened as "Hoppe Town." Japanese and Western sweets will be on the first floor (opening February 5th), while daily ingredients, prepared meals, bento boxes, and fresh produce will be on the basement floor, forming a town with a name for each. "Kasho Mitowa," produced by the Tohoku-based confectionery maker Sanzen, will open its first store in Japan, while "Sukoyaka" (tentative name), which sells bento boxes and side dishes made with recipes from the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, will open its first store in a department store. Kanaya Hotel Bakery, a pioneering resort hotel with a reputation for its meal bread, will also open its first store in a Tokyo department store.
