Pass the Baton x Film "Met Gala Dressed Museum" to Sell "Oriental" Vintage Tableware and Apparel

Apr 7, 2017

A special event will be held at the PASS THE BATON Omotesando store from April 13th to May 7th in collaboration with the documentary film "Met Gala: The Art of Dressing," which will be released on April 15th.

"Met Gala: The Art of Dressing" is a documentary film that closely follows Andrew Bolton, the innovative curator who was in charge of the special exhibition at the Met Gala, the industry's largest fashion event, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on May 2nd, 2015, and co-host Anna Wintour, aka "The Devil Wears Prada."

The theme of the 2015 special exhibition at the Met Gala, which brought together celebrities such as pop star Rihanna, Academy Award regulars George Clooney and Anne Hathaway, and fashion heavyweight Jean-Paul Gaultier, was "China: Through the Looking Glass," a concept conceived by Bolton. This film captures the eight months of work the pair undertook to create this one-night feast for the first time. Based on the concept of "endless dialogue between East and West," this ambitious documentary explores the ways Western designers are presented in China, as well as the history of 1930s Hollywood films that conveyed stereotypical Chinese beauty to the West. Westerners have long been fascinated by the mysterious beauty of Eastern countries like China and Japan, and even if they could not see them in person, they have always fantasized about them. It is in this imagination that "Orientalism," the concept of Eastern culture within the West, flourished. To celebrate the release of the film, Pass the Baton will be holding a special event titled "Stereotypical Orientalism." Pass the Baton will exhibit and sell a selection of vintage clothing and tableware evocative of the "Oriental" aesthetic, including silk Oriental sleeveless tops, vintage Chinese-print cardigans, and antique Chinoiserie-style overplates.

In addition, those who purchase items from this project will receive one of the following gifts on a first-come, first-served basis: a ticket to the Met Gala: A Museum Dressed in a Dress, a clear file, or non-sale press materials. (*All gifts are limited in quantity and will end when stock runs out.)
