"MUSCOVITE," a photo exhibition featuring photos by Kasai Itsushi and Maki Yoko, will be held in Daikanyama

Jan 6, 2014

Photographer Chikashi Kasai's photo exhibition "MUSCOVITE" opens January 17th at Gallery Speak For in Daikanyama.

This exhibition follows the publication of the photo book of the same name (published by Kobunsha) last December. Kasai photographed actress Yoko Maki at a villa on the outskirts of Moscow, hotel rooms, and on the subway. Kasai's live snapshots taken with his FUJI FinePix X100 and his documentary approach aim to bring out Maki's charms, which differ from the traditional gravure photography style. The exhibition features approximately 30 original half-sheet-sized prints created specifically for this exhibition, interweaving Moscow cityscapes and portraits. In addition to the prints, related items such as the photo book will also be available for sale at the venue. Born in Tokyo in 1970, Kasai studied in Germany for eight years from 1980, graduating from Tama Art University in 1995. Discovered by photographer Nan Goldin and influenced by Nobuyoshi Araki, he held a photo exhibition titled "Tokyo Dance" in 1997. The following year he published a photo book of the same name and held solo exhibitions in Stockholm and New York. He has since participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, and has also taken portraits of numerous actresses, TV personalities, and musicians. His father is the butoh dancer Akira Kasai.
