Recruit Lifestyle Co., Ltd.'s Beauty Research Institute conducted a nationwide beauty survey targeting men and women aged 20 to 64 living in cities with a population of over 200,000. The survey revealed a decline in salon visits, while an increase in home care practices.

The rate of eye beauty salon visits among women fell 1.9 points from last year to 7.7%. The 20 to 34 age group (12.6%) saw a particularly large decline of 3.5 points from last year. The 35 to 49 age group had the highest salon visit rate, with an average of 6.11 visits per year, and the highest percentage visited 12 or more times per year. Popular requests included eyelash perms and curls (38.3%) and eyelash extensions (37.6%). Despite the decline in salon visits, the rate of home eyelash care using eyelash serums rose to 13.2%, with approximately one in five people (18.7%) in the 20 to 34 age group reporting using them.

Nail salon visits for women overall also fell 3.1 points compared to last year. Although the 20-34 age group had the highest visit rate at 20.2%, they still saw a significant decrease of 5.7 points from last year. Meanwhile, the 50-64 age group visited salons the most, 6.24 times per year. The highest rate of visits was 12 or more times per year, at 25.9%. The most popular service overall was hand gel (40.6%), beating out hand polish color (15.1%) and hand care (14.1%). Approximately one in ten women aged 20-34 (9.9%), who saw a decline in salon visits, now do their own nails at home using gel light and gel nail kits.

In addition, the 50-64 age group had the highest annual visits to beauty salons and barber shops for both men and women (6.59 visits for men and 6.02 visits for women). In particular, 13.9% of women visit beauty salons 12 or more times per year, which is about 2.2 times the number of women aged 20 to 34. Women aged 50 to 64 had the highest number of visits per year and the amount spent per visit for hair removal treatments at beauty salons (5.50 visits, 5,998 yen) and the highest number of visits and amount spent for slimming treatments (7.18 visits, 9.183 yen) of all age groups. Although the rate of salon visits among middle-aged and elderly people is low, the number of visits and amount spent tend to be high for those who visit.
