The top overseas destination for 2014 is a surprising country

Feb 2, 2014

Travel review site 4Travel conducted a survey of its members about "destinations they would like to travel abroad in 2014." Respondents were asked to select the area they would like to visit this year from a total of nine options: eight regions (Asia, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Oceania, Micronesia, the Middle East, and Africa), plus "none." Thailand came in first place. Travel reasons ranged from "visiting historical sites," "relaxing at a resort," and "enjoying golf and diving." Despite the current unstable situation, Thailand also topped the list of overseas travel destinations for the New Year's holiday season. Spain and France tied for second place. Many of the "Spain" respondents cited World Heritage sites, including the Sagrada Familia, as their travel destination, with some also expressing a desire to watch a soccer game or go bar-hopping. Those who chose "France" cited museums, World Heritage sites, and gourmet food, including wine. The United States and Germany tied for fourth place.

By region, the most popular overall was "Europe" (38.2%), followed by "Asia" (31.9%) and "North America" (12.1%). There were differences between men and women, with "Europe" (44.1%) being the top choice for women and "Asia" (37.7%) for men. Women who answered Europe made comments expressing their desire to "enjoy shopping," "walk through beautiful cityscapes," "visit castles," and "enjoy sweets," while many men who answered Asia cited gourmet food as their travel purpose. Other comments included "visiting old buildings such as ruins," "enjoy diving," and "relaxing and recuperating." There were many repeat visitors to Asia.
