[SMALL TALK by Tommy] One photo

May 19, 2013

You happen to open a magazine and come across a beautiful photograph that catches your eye. It's probably an advertisement for a brand or product. It shows a subject positioned in the light, and the photographer peering through the viewfinder and pressing the shutter to capture the moment.

But in fact, there's much more there that can't be seen with the naked eye.
There's the creative director who gives instructions on the visual image and concept, the models and their casting team, the stylists rushing around with extra costumes and props, and the hair and makeup artists. There's also the countless hours spent scouting locations and leasing equipment.
There's also the location bus and catering staff. In locations where filming permits aren't granted, there's also the need for physical guards to keep police and security guards from interrupting the shoot. Music is also a must to create a lively atmosphere on set.

Yes, there are many people and moments not shown that make up a single photograph...

I myself just recently experienced such a photoshoot. This shoot was for the relaunch of the French brand "MAX PITTION," due to be released in September 2013. The eyewear line was founded in Paris in the 1940s, and John Mayer acquired the rights, leading us to create the designs.
We wanted a vintage feel, so we chose a 1963 Mercedes-Benz Touring Cabriolet for the shoot. I personally drove it to Tokyo from Cartoon Nagoya, a vintage car store.
Keith Washington was in charge of styling, Jacob Hodgkinson was in charge of photography, and Alec was in charge of the behind-the-scenes footage. The models' hair and makeup started at my studio at 4:30 AM, and the shoot began in Nishi-Shinjuku at 5 AM. The early morning light was amazing!
We had to park the Mercedes several times to get the perfect angle, but that was fun too.

Afterwards, we went to the next location, a music bar in Yoyogi Village. There was great music, we danced, and we took photos... the best vibes. It felt great!

A memorable advertising photo. Imagine the many hours that so many people spent for just that one moment when that photo was taken. The finished photo is the crystallization of everyone's passion.
Thanks to all the staff!
