May 31, 2013

Actor and film director Clint Eastwood was born on May 31, 1930, in San Francisco, USA. He studied acting at Los Angeles City College and then signed with Universal Studios, but initially struggled, working only in B-movies. However, he rose to fame in the 1959 TV series "Rawhide," and then made his film debut in "A Fistful of Dollars" in 1964. This work was a huge hit and attracted worldwide attention. He then solidified his position as an action star with "Dirty Harry" in 1971. He made his directorial debut in 1971 with "Melody." He continued to balance his acting and directing careers. In 1992, he won Best Director and Best Picture at the 65th Academy Awards and Best Director at the 50th Golden Globe Awards for the western "Unforgiven," which he directed and starred in. He then won his second Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture for "Million Dollar Baby" in 2004. At 74, he was the oldest recipient of the Academy Award in history.

He took a break from acting after his starring role in the 2008 film "Gran Torino," but in 2012, he made waves by playing an aging Major League Baseball scout in "The Best Place to Be." His first film appearance in four years was in 2013. During the US presidential election that fall, he performed a stunt at the Republican National Convention, speaking to an empty chair (pretending to be President Obama), creating such a stir that it spawned a Twitter account called "@InvisibleObama" and the verb "eastwooding." While the term was once used to mean "firing a magnum gun," it has now come to describe the act of speaking to an empty space.

In his personal life, he has seven children. Her daughter, Alison Eastwood, is an actress, model, and fashion designer, and produces the clothing brand "Eastwood Ranch."
