Early summer in Cannes. Star actresses dressed in black and white from Dior and Chanel.

May 23, 2013

Held annually in early summer in the southern French resort town of Cannes, the festival is often adorned with vibrantly colored dresses. However, this year's edition was a little different. The most eye-catching colors were undoubtedly black and white, and color-blocking.

An iconic shot was taken on the red carpet at the premiere of Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring." Emma Watson wore Chanel, Katie Chung in Dior, and Taissa Farmiga in Valentino. Each dress was unique, but the entire look, including Coppola's, was unified in black and white, demonstrating impressive teamwork.

Carey Mulligan, who appeared in a pale pink dress at the premiere of "The Great Gatsby," also wore a black Balenciaga jumpsuit and Saint Laurent T-strap pumps at the photocall for the film. At the premiere of her other film, Inside Llewyn Davis, produced by the Coen brothers, she wore a black and white dress with an Art Deco design.

22-year-old Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, who appeared on the red carpet at the premiere of Jimmy P., wore a simple yet gorgeous Dior evening dress.

The dress worn by Marion Cotillard at the premiere of Blood Ties was striking, featuring a white-based multi-color block design. It was part of Raf Simons' first Dior cruise collection, which was shown in Monte Carlo last weekend. The design, inspired by the Mondrian style of the 1960s, may be one of the best dresses of the Cannes Film Festival.
