To celebrate the release of animal photographer Mitsuaki Iwago's photo book "Cat Walk" (Crevis), an exhibition of the same name will be held at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi in Tokyo from the 29th.
The exhibition features 222 (meow meow meow) cat photographs Iwago has taken. It is divided into three chapters: "Walking the World" (131 photographs), which will feature the first public showing of his latest works featuring cats he encountered in Greece, Italy, Turkey, Morocco, the United States, and Cuba during his visits from last year to this year; "Walking Japan" (67 photographs), which features cats from all 47 prefectures across Japan photographed over the course of approximately 10 years; and "Our Cats" (24 photographs), which introduces the cats who have lived in the Iwago family home over the years.
From May 29th to June 2nd, 8th, and 9th, Iwago will be holding a gallery talk and autograph session for the first 100 people to purchase the photo book. After the exhibition at the Nihonbashi store ends, the exhibition will tour the country, including Mitsukoshi department stores in Sapporo, Matsuyama, and Fukuyama. Born in Tokyo in 1950, Iwago was inspired by a visit to the Galapagos Islands while he was a university student and has continued to photograph animals around the world, from wild pandas and polar bears to Japanese racehorses. He has also made photographing cats his life's work, publishing numerous photobooks including "Beloved Cats" (published by Kodansha) and "I Met a Good Cat Today" (published by Nippon Shuppansha, Shincho Bunko). Last year, he began filming for the NHK BS Premium program "Mitsuaki Iwago's World Cat Walk." "Cat Walk," which goes on sale on the 29th, is the second volume of the photobook "Cats," which was published in 2010 and sold over 70,000 copies. It features approximately 140 photos, primarily unpublished photographs of cats from countries he has visited in recent years and in Japan.
