Designer Mikya Kobayashi proposes a new lifestyle. Exhibition held at Shinjuku Ozone

May 28, 2013

An exhibition featuring new furniture and products by interior designer Mikya Kobayashi will be held at Nippon Form, the fourth floor of Living Design Center OZONE in Hatsudai, Tokyo, from June 6th through July 30th.

Based on the theme of new lifestyles and homes, the exhibition showcases Kobayashi's ideal furniture and tools, showcasing a low-slung lifestyle using tatami mats, a staple of Nippon Form. The exhibition proposes a space that harmonizes with the daily routine of meal preparation, socializing, and tidying up.

The exhibition will feature over 50 products, primarily new pieces from the numerous series Kobayashi has collaborated with to date. A walnut armchair will be featured in the "HARU" series, a collaboration with Karimoku Furniture. HARU was designed by Kobayashi as "furniture that does not oppress or assert itself too much, blends in with any living space, and exudes a comfortable presence." The chairs are made without the use of reinforcement legs, known as "nuki," and instead utilize an advanced joining technique called "finger joints" to ensure strength and a lightweight finish. Other exhibits include the "nagi" series by Fuji Furniture in Tokushima Prefecture, new card cases from "kime," a collaboration with woodworkers in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, the "IKI" and "KANAYA" collections of cast and copperware tools from Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, "chii," furniture and tools made from recycled small pieces of wood, his signature works "UKI HASHI" and "TATE OTAMA," and his latest product, the door chime "Timbre." Kobayashi was born in 1981 and graduated from Musashino Art University in 2005. He founded MIKIYA KOBAYASHI DESIGN in 2006. In 2010, he won the highest honor, the Gold Award, at the iF product design award in Germany. He opened the shop "TAIYOU no SHITA" in 2011. In 2012, the company name was changed to Kobayashi Mikiya Studio Co., Ltd. and incorporated.

In addition, a talk event will be held on July 5th, with writer and photographer Joe Suzuki as the interviewer.
