Exhibition of Robert Capa and the first female photojournalist, Gerda Taro, to be held, including works shown in Japan for the first time

Jan 15, 2013

From Saturday, January 26th to Sunday, March 24th, the Yokohama Museum of Art will host an exhibition dedicated to one of the world's most renowned photographers, Robert Capa.

Next year will mark exactly one century since the birth of André Friedmann, also known as Robert Capa. However, the name Robert Capa was originally a fictional photographer created by Friedmann and a German woman named Gerda Taro (real name Gerta Bohorile).

The two met in Paris in 1934 and hit it off, and in 1936 they began taking and selling photojournalistic photographs under the fictitious name Robert Capa. Friedmann himself later became "Capa," and Taro also became independent as a photographer. Just as this was happening, she lost her life at the age of 26 while covering the Spanish Civil War. Taro's existence and death are said to have had a profound impact on Capa's subsequent work.

This exhibition consists of two solo exhibitions featuring the photographs of each of the two photographers, and a rich selection of approximately 300 works and related materials highlights the connections and differences in their personalities.

In addition, in a first for the Yokohama Museum of Art, all 193 of Capa's works from its collection will be exhibited together, including some works that will be shown in Japan for the first time. In addition, 83 photographs by Taro, who is said to be the first female photojournalist, will be shown in Japan for the first time. Photographs taken by the two photographers from the same location, each from their own perspective, will also be on display. Also during the event, there will be a talk show with war photographer Yoichi Watanabe (Thursday, January 31st from 1:30pm, free admission, registration required), a lecture by non-fiction author and essayist Kotaro Sawaki entitled "Capa of Youth" (Sunday, February 3rd from 3pm, free admission, first come first served), and screenings of the film "Capa & Films" (Saturday, February 23rd and Sunday, February 24th from 2:30pm to around 6pm, free admission, first come first served).
