On the 11th, MARC JACOBS will open its bookstore BOOKMARC on Cat Street in Harajuku, Tokyo (1F, 4-26-14 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), marking its first Asian expansion. Opening hours are from 11:00 to 20:00. This is the brand's fifth store, following those in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Paris.
The 78.8 square meter space, designed by Stephan Jaklitsch, who also designed all Marc Jacobs stores, will feature a selection of books related to art, music culture, photo books, and other sources of inspiration for Marc himself. While the store will primarily stock Western books, it will also carry Japanese books. The store features a selection of books not even available on Amazon, including Michael & Gerlinde's World, a diary-like visual book by Michael Costiff, who shaped London's underground scene; West Coast Hip Hop: A History in Pictures, which follows the hip-hop scene by photographer Michael Miller; and The Unknown Hipster Diaries, a collection of works by fashion illustrator Delhomme. The vintage corner, separated by glass doors, is home to even rarer items. On display and for sale are signed collections of works by contemporary artist Richard Prince, photo books of the Hells Angels, Man Ray's Jean Cocteau photo book, and a book clutch by Olympia Le Tan. In addition to books, the store will also carry eco-bags featuring the BOOKMARC logo, stationery such as ballpoint pens and notebooks, letter sets, key chains, and other popular items at stores in other countries. Backpacks (19,950 yen) and T-shirts (7,350 yen) are available exclusively at the Tokyo store. Also opening simultaneously on the first basement floor is Japan's first street-level store for MARC BY MARC JACOBS MENS. Diagonally opposite is the MARC BY MARC JACOBS store, bringing together the brand's shops. In other countries, stores from each brand line up side by side, forming a "Marc Jacobs area." "This was the perfect place to open, as it's where Marc by was originally located and is a lively place. We want young people who no longer read books to pick up our books," said a Bookmark representative.
The first Bookmark store opened in September 2010 on Bleecker Street in New York, where many Marc Jacobs shops are located. This location is also home to many Marc Jacobs shops.
