Ginza Mitsukoshi turns Kabuki designs such as "Fujimusume" and "Kanjincho" into fashion at GFW

Oct 18, 2013

As part of Ginza Fashion Week (GFW), the "GFW Ginza Re-Design Exhibition: Collaboration with Kabuki Costumes" is being held at the Terrace/Terrace Court on the 9th floor of Ginza Mitsukoshi. This exhibition showcases one-of-a-kind dresses and accessories made with textiles from stage costumes previously only used for kabuki costumes. Japanese designers such as Support Surface, Taro Horiuchi, Flicka, Sakayori, and Akane Utsunomiya have created one-of-a-kind collections using silk fabrics originally only worn by kabuki actors, such as "Fujimusume" and "Tsuchigumo," and the "Okina-goshi" pattern worn by Musashibo Benkei in "Kanjincho." These fabrics are also available for purchase, along with a boxed assortment of Ginza's famous sweets, scrunchies, bags, and other miscellaneous items.

"There used to be nearly 100 Nishijin weavers in Kyoto that made Kabuki costumes, but now there are only a few left, so this project is important in order to preserve and utilize the skills of traditional craftsmen. The collection by this young Tokyo designer is also very well-made," says kimono stylist Tomita Nobuaki, who worked on the Kabuki design motif items for this event.
