Painter Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain. He passed away on April 8, 1973, at the age of 91.

His father was an art teacher, and his mother was his childhood friend. He studied painting from an early age, and in 1892 he enrolled at a local art school. He entered the Barcelona Art School in 1895 and the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1897, winning various awards while still a student.
In 1900, he began working in Paris. Influenced by the death of his close friend, this period is known as his "Blue Period," featuring many works with dark blue tones. In 1904, he found a new lover, and went through his "Rose Period," depicting circus performers and other figures in bright colors, and his "African Sculpture Period," produced works such as "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" in 1907. Around 1909, he encountered the works and theories of Cézanne and began exploring Cubism with Georges Braque. He painted realistic portraits during World War I, and in 1920, he embarked on a "Neoclassical" period with monumental classical nudes. Around 1925, influenced by Surrealism, he began painting monstrous motifs. The Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936, and the following year, he produced "Guernica" in protest against the violent actions of Spain's Franco and Fascism. He remained in Paris during World War II, and after the war, he settled in southern France, working in Cannes and elsewhere. In his later years, he left behind a diverse range of styles, a culmination of his work up to that point, and produced many self-portraits. He died of pulmonary edema in April 1973. During his lifetime, he is said to have produced approximately 13,500 oil paintings and drawings, 100,000 prints, 34,000 illustrations, and 300 sculptures and ceramics.

He is famous for wearing a boat-neck striped shirt known as a Basque shirt, as photographed by Robert Doisneau.
