Painter Roy Lichtenstein was born on October 27, 1923, in New York, USA. He passed away on September 29, 1997.
He studied at the Art Students League in 1939 and entered the Ohio State University College of Fine Arts in 1940. He completed his master's degree there in 1949, including a stint in the military. He began working as a commercial designer in 1951 and held his first solo exhibition. Around 1957, he began producing abstract paintings.
In 1961, he attracted attention with an oil painting of an enlarged comic panel. Using only the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow, he established a unique style of composition featuring thick, clear outlines and dots that mimic the halftone dots found in printed matter, becoming a key figure in the movement of pop art. While using manga and everyday items as motifs, he also produced a series of paintings from 1962 to the 1980s that cited masterpieces by modern masters such as Picasso, as well as traditional subjects such as still lifes and landscapes, and adapted them to his own pop style.

In 1995, his representative work, "Girl with a Hair Ribbon," was purchased by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo for 600 million yen, causing a stir. He passed away in September 1997 at the age of 73.
