Ancco, an illustrator active in a wide range of fields, including collaborations with apparel brands and CD jacket design, is holding a solo exhibition at the Isetan Girl Gallery on the second floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku until October 29th.
Her works, which pursue "the transience of the world that surrounds us in our daily lives," are characterized by a pink that glows amidst hazy colors. Although the pink color stands out overall, ancco says, "pink is a cool color," and the lines are clearly drawn even within the fantastical atmosphere, giving the works a mysterious sense of "reality."
The title of the solo exhibition, "Spy On You," means "spying on you." "Ever since I started drawing, I've continued to depict the everyday lives of ordinary girls. In my work, I want to convey the 'feelings of longing for someone' that girls have. This time, my work was inspired by the image of a 'spy' secretly spying on someone. I hope to express the 'feelings of longing for someone' and 'the passion for the things you love.' However, how viewers feel about and interpret my work will vary depending on their own sensibilities, so I hope they will enjoy the freedom of their emotions," says ancco.
The exhibition features over a dozen works, including the painting "Spy On You" (¥52,500), which also serves as the title of the exhibition, and "SNS Addiction" (¥31,500). The collection includes works from around 2011, when she first began her career as an illustrator, as well as newly commissioned pieces. Each piece depicts a moment from a girl's daily life. In addition to the paintings, there will also be a silk-print sweatshirt (¥8,400) and a collection of her works (¥2,100). Paintings are available for pre-order and will be delivered after the exhibition ends. The venue will not only display the artworks, but will also be an installation that includes a space depicting the girls' private lives, with table sets and beds.
Illustrator ancco was born in 1989. She began drawing under the name ancco in 2011. Her first solo exhibition was held in 2013. As an illustrator who pursues "the transience of the world that surrounds us in our daily lives," she has expanded into fashion and worked on CD jackets.
