Are you familiar with the term "underground"? It may ring nostalgic for those over a certain age. From the late 1960s to the 1970s, avant-garde artists known as "underground" emerged in the theater, music, and art scenes, driving Japanese culture. Terayama Shuji, who was at the center of this movement, is a key figure in this photo exhibition. "TOKYO1970 by Japanese Photographers 9," organized by the photography magazine "IMA," is running until the 29th of this month at the Armani Ginza Tower Event Hall on the 9th floor. The exhibition features nine photographers who represent the 1970s, including Arita Taiji, Sawatari Hajime, Suda Issei, Tachiki Yoshihiro, Terayama Shuji, Naito Masatoshi, Hosoe Eikoh, Moriyama Daido, and Watanabe Katsumi (in alphabetical order). The 1970s were a time when people seeking freedom spoke out in politics and artists were active and free. This exhibition features 300 "Tokyo" photographs by nine photographers who captured this atmosphere with a sense of emotion. According to curator Akio Nagasawa, "This exhibition centers on Shuji Terayama, who is key to unraveling the 1970s, and features photographers associated with Terayama." The anarchy, fashion, reality, and moods of 1970s Tokyo are vividly portrayed through the photographers' perspectives. While each photograph has been previously published, "Daido Yokoyama's 'Goodbye Photography' included 40 previously unseen works, making it a valuable exhibition worldwide," Nagasawa says. There's a growing trend to enjoy photography as part of interior design, much like painting. To meet this demand, photographs are available for sale at the venue. Events by the exhibiting photographers are scheduled for the weekends during the exhibition.
