Kosuke Tsumura's first solo exhibition, "RECOMBINATION," is running through May 21st at Spiral Garden in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. An opening reception party was held on the 10th. After launching his own brand, FINAL HOME, which is based on the concept of emergency preparedness ("If you lose your home, clothing is your last line of protection"), in 2009 he developed "PUZZLE WARE," inspired by cell division. Tsumura is a professor in the Department of Scenarios, Display, and Fashion Design at Musashino Art University and currently works as a fashion designer. This exhibition features a lineup of works assembled with Tsumura's aesthetic sensibility, utilizing the concept of puzzlewear, which creates shapes by combining design pieces with protrusions and slits. The main space to the left of the entrance features clothing incorporating various national flags, a dress constructed from interior materials, and pieces created from materials such as PVC sheets, bubble wrap, and cardboard. The exhibition features clothing, furniture, objects, and art pieces made from everything from materials typically used in clothing to industrial supplies, all cut into puzzle wear. Additionally, in the space up the stairs to the right of the entrance, works by eight artists are cut up like puzzle wear and reassembled by Tsumura. Regarding the exhibition and his works, Tsumura said, "I wanted to convey that creation isn't something that only special people like designers or artists can do, but that anyone can do it. That's why I wanted as many people as possible to know about puzzle wear. I want people to not only get a glimpse into Tsumura's mind, but also to look at it while thinking about how I would do it." He added, "To some people, this may seem like a culmination, but personally, I get bored with the things I've made, and even when I look at the works I've completed, I find myself wanting to rearrange them, or thinking it would be interesting if I did it separately. It never ends."
As for her future plans, she laughed and said, "I'm thinking of starting a brand. Clothes that explore the possibilities in imperfections and gaps, and expressions of beauty using clothing as a tool. I don't know yet whether it will ultimately become a brand or a work of art, but it will be a pleasure to see what comes out of it. I didn't make Final Home by planning ahead either. It's not fun if you plan too much."
